Walnut Grove United Methodist Church--It is thought that the first church was built of logs and was located on the J. L. Wilson, R. S. Strickland, and C. P. Wilson lands where they corner. This was in Walnut Grove and when the church was moved to its present location on Rt. 54, Wilson Ridge, the church name, Walnut Grove, was retained.
The first Walnut Grove Church at Wilson Ridge was build on ground donated by the Gibson family for the church and cemetery. This was around 1880. In 1923, the old church was torn down and another was built in the same location. Free will offerings and free labor, given by the people of the community, built the chruch which was dedicated in 1924. This church burned June 20, 1975, and a rebuild church was ready for use in September 1975.

The Walnut Grove Cemetery is located approximately four miles from Dille, West Virginia. To get to the cemetery from Dille, one should go to the top of Widen Hill and take a right turn. This information was compiled by Brenda Hickman in July, 1996, and transmitted to the Clay County pages by Mrs. Lola Butcher Given with the permission of Ms. Hickman. Ms. Hickman states that several stones in the cemetery are beyond reading and there are several field stones.
His mother apprenticed or bound him over to a tailor to learn the tailors trade. It was in those days thought to be the duty of the parents to see that their children learned a trade. Charlie didn't like the man for whom he worked. After he had about learned his trade, one day in a fit of rage he threw a pair of scissors a the tailor and decided it was time to leave. Paul and Louise Wilson have two of his flat irons and a bowl from their Sunday dishes.
He had a girl friend named Wilmuth Jones and went to her home. Where she hid him in the family barn for three days carrying food to him. He was waiting for another boy going to west Virginia to slip away. His mother was a Mc Cue and had two brothers who lived near Summervsville so they walked through the woods to Summersville. On their way they met a group of surveyors who invited them to spend the night in their camp. The surveyors had with them a male Negro cook Abe grandpa Charles said he made the most delicious dried apple pies for Supper. The boy with him wanted them to steal some of them by putting them under their shirts, but grandpa said no. The next morning the cook gave them some to take with them. Later he returned to Virginia and married Wilmuth, then taking her back to Summersville.
He enlisted as a private in the 2nd company f 25 Virginia infantry on March 30 1862. He was injured in November, 1862 and appears to have spent several months in the hospital according to company muster roll call. He is present on the muster rolls from November to December 1863 and from January through April. 1864. He is listed as a prisoner of war at point lookout Maryland as having Been captured on may 5th 1864 in wilderness Virginia. He was transferred to Prison in Elmira New York on August 15, 1864. He was exchanged and paroled at Camp Lee, near Richmond, Virginia on February 5, 1865.
